It may not come as a surprise to you that E.L.M. Tree Care values environmentally friendly operations. After all, we’re all about tree health, and getting that right is easier with intentional green initiatives in place.
While we embrace innovation, the idea is to harness it to reduce our environmental impact during a tree care job. Some of the ways we do that are with modern battery-powered equipment, a fleet with cutting-edge GPS systems, and our ability to turn waste into a valuable resource.
Here’s how our certified arborists take sustainability to the next level.
Did you know that battery-powered equipment is more eco-friendly than other forms of fuel? This practice aids our conservation efforts in five primary ways:
#1 No Emissions
Tools powered by a two-stroke engine pollute more than your average car. Battery-powered equipment and small vehicles offer a far more sustainable solution with zero emissions. The California Air Resources Board equates running a gas-powered leaf blower for one hour with driving 1,100 miles in a 2017 Toyota Camry, so we’d like to thank batteries for helping us say goodbye to that kind of pollution each day.
#2 Increased Efficiency
Do you know why gas-powered equipment generates so much heat? It’s wasted energy that dissipates into the air rather than powering the machine! Using batteries wastes less—we then pass those savings on to you.
#3 Easy Recharging
Recharging a lithium-ion battery does leave a carbon footprint if you obtain your electricity from a traditional source (like gas or coal). Our reliance on wind and solar energy to charge things reduces this potential impact on the environment.
#4 No Risk
If you’ve ever filled a lawnmower with gasoline, you know drips are inevitable. Batteries are attractive green initiatives that minimize this wasted fuel. That adds up to a lot of fuel saved with millions of gas-powered machines decommissioned.
#5 Surprising Reliability
Many people consider electric equipment more unreliable than gas-powered alternatives. If you’ve ever struggled to start a gas engine as you hear it sputter, you might rethink that assumption. By contrast, more environmentally friendly battery-powered leaf blowers and brush cutters consistently earn high reliability ratings (and technology continues to improve!).
GPS Tracking and Cameras in All Company Trucks
Why does E.L.M. Tree Care bother to equip vehicles with GPS tracking and cameras? So that we can make data-driven decisions, of course.
How else could we meaningfully improve our resource management? With data, we know when to take a different route to our appointments to reduce fuel consumption and emissions
In the same way, nearly every industry can benefit from utilizing GPS technology. For example, the National Institute of Standards and Technology reports it saves the agriculture industry an average of $15 billion every year through:
- Increasing crop yields
- More efficient use of materials
- More precise watering, planting, and fertilizing
At E.L.M. Tree Care, we bring this technology to the tree care industry, and everyone benefits.
The Benefits of Wood Chips for Your Yard
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “reduce, reuse, and recycle,” and at E.L.M. Tree Care, that means wood chips. Our top-notch system even delivers free wood chips to property owners. Instead of just discarding wood chips, use them in the following environmentally friendly ways:
- Trees – We take wood chips from every part of a tree, providing more nutrients than bark-only chips. It’s an amazing fertilizer for your garden and trees!
- Humans – Do you have a grill or smoker? Wood chips as fuel provide a delicious, smoky flavor.
- Animals – Wood chips are also a sustainable source of animal bedding for comfortable pets or livestock.
One Tree Planted
One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and environmental organizations to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. Reforestation helps to restore forests that have been degraded or deforested, provide jobs for social impact, and restore biodiversity habitat. Many projects have overlapping objectives that contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Learn more at onetreeplanted.org.
